As Liberty kicked off the 2025-2026 school year, its ASB department faced two huge position changes: the appointing of a new Activity Coordinator and the creation of a Club Leadership Advisor position.
Over the summer, Jacob Crawford took over for Michelle Munson as ASB’s Activity Coordinator.
“Ms. Munson had been here for a really long time, and was amazing at what she did. It’s big shoes to fill, but everyone’s been very welcoming and supportive,” Crawford said.
Michelle Munson held this position for the past 15 years, so the switch has been a struggle and an opportunity for ASB students.
“We’re learning with him instead of him teaching us, but that’s also opened up a lot more doors for us, especially when it comes to working more directly with the students and planning bigger and better events,” ASB student president Marlee La Madrid said.
Although Crawford never attended Liberty, he lives nearby, and his wife and her family are Liberty alumni. Crawford is also the Liberty’s head girls wrestling coach, so he was very excited when the ASB position became available.
“I think the activities coordinator position is very unique because you have the opportunity to make a huge impact on the entire school through building school spirit and supporting the many activities we hold,” Crawford said.
As Activity Coordinator, Crawford oversees the ASB leadership program and all of its activities, such as dances, assemblies, and fundraisers. He also helps ASB clubs manage their advertising, fairs, budgets, and field trips.
“Mr. Crawford is basically our support system, and because he’s doing this for the first time, he’s less like a teacher and more like a team member when it comes to our exec team. We all pitch ideas to each other and he helps us iron out the logistics with the district and what we’re allowed to do,” La Madrid said.
While Crawford expresses his need to sit back, read the scene, and learn from what students enjoyed in the past, he also wants to have ASB students focus more on their day-to-day impact on Liberty’s student body, and to increase student engagement and connection.
Along with the addition of Crawford, Liberty’s ASB also held another significant staff change in the form of Andrea Marquez as the ASB Club Leadership Advisor.
Marquez has been at Liberty for just over a decade. She has been an ASB class advisor twice, and is currently the multilingual learner specialist, teaching AP Human Geography, and the Black Student Union advisor.
“This year we have a new advisor position, my position, and that’s Club Leadership Advisor. My job is to focus on clubs, specifically on the student side,” Marquez said.
Formerly, Marquez’s job would be covered by the ASB Activity Coordinator. But, in a specialized position, Marquez can make a more focused effort to support student leaders and struggling clubs.
The position was created by Munson and Jordan Frost, the district Athletics and Activities director.
Munson and Frost’s interest in Marquez holding this new position started shortly after she did an interview for the ninth grade ASB advisor position at the end of the previous school year.
“At first, I was unsure if this position was really being offered because they legitimately wanted and needed it, but Ms. Munson assured me that they had considered this position in the past, but had not felt ready for it,” Marquez said, “and they felt I have the right energy, mentality, and experience to make it into something great.”
Going into a brand new position, Marquez didn’t know what to expect.
“Mr. Crawford and I are literally writing the job description by this month,” Marquez said. “It was a little nerve wracking to come into a position that didn’t have a specific job description, but also kind of cool, because then you get to write it on your own.”
