The Liberty Boys’ Golf Team has had many changes this season, such as the formation of a JV team and the introduction of a new head coach. These changes have presented many new strengths to their team, influencing a great team dynamic and some internal competition.
“Some of the strengths are that each year, new people are stepping up to fill the roles of all the seniors that left. Last year we had Jay and Calvin, but, now that they are gone, we have new people stepping up into that role,” senior varsity captain Ethan Lee said.
This season, Darren Tremblay has stepped in as the team’s new head varsity coach.
“Tremblay is very into the game, and he’s a very good coach in general,” sophomore varsity player Mason Lu said.
In addition to a new head coach, a JV team has been established.
“Since Tremblay has been the coach, we have restructured the team. A huge change this year is that there’s a JV team, as last year there wasn’t one. Now, more people can be involved, and it adds a bit of competition for our varsity as well, creating a new team dynamic,” Lee said.
In order to develop cohesion, despite golf being an “individual” sport, the team has certain activities to strengthen their teamwork.
“For team bonding exercises, we have little games we play. Sometimes, it’s a two person scramble where you have a partner and you would take the best ball out of two shots. It really helps with teamwork because you have to communicate well with your teammate to try to figure out your strategy,” Lee said.
The focus on team dynamic is strongly encouraged by Darren Tremblay.
“Even though golf is played individually, it’s a big team sport. It’s got to be about saving strokes for the team, not playing selfishly. They have done a great job with that so far,” Tremblay said.
The teams record stands at 4-0-4, with the official season coming to an end, the post-season has begun.
The players competing in the Kingco tournament are Caden Burris, Jake Bajsarowicz, Clay Cakarnis, Mason Chin, Mason Lu, and Tim Park.
