Liberty athletics has a knockout season

Liberty and its sports teams have dominated this past spring season with quite a few of our teams advancing all the way to state! Here are some of their postseason highlights:

Tennis:

Liberty Girls’ Tennis recently concluded their brilliant 2023 season, where they came together as a team and had some players advance to the KingCo league tournament.

“We had a lot of good competition this year,” senior team captain Lily Richardson. “I’m proud of the team for working and performing their best.”

They braved the difficult spring weather and went into the postseason with six players. Seniors Charlotte Ury and Elena Bomgardner advanced as doubles and seniors Kaia Le and Lily Richarson advanced as the other. Junior Mackenzie Cung and sophomore Chloe Young moved on as singles.

While all the players performed really well, Le and Richardson beat out their opponent and moved on. The duo played their best but just fell short in their first match of the district SeaKing tournament.

Soccer:

Liberty Boys’ Varsity Soccer just finished up their roller-coaster of a 2023 season which ended with a quarterfinal berth in the state tournament, something no Liberty Boys’ Soccer team has done for more than 10 years.

“I think the season was successful. We made the quarterfinals in state and we came together as a team, overcame adversity, and accomplished things a lot of people didn’t think we would,” senior Connor O’Brien said.

The team persevered through difficult moments in the season such as being blown out by rival teams or losing several straight games to the point where their backs were up against the wall, needing a win in the district playoffs versus Juanita. They won five straight games from that day, going through Juanita, Interlake, Mercer Island, Stadium, and then Gig Harbor to reach the aforementioned quarterfinals against Lakeside, last year’s runner-up.

Track and Field:

After a season full of hard work, Liberty Track and Field concluded at their state championship with an impressive ninth place finish. They previously had a spectacular showing at the KingCo league competition walking away as the champions.

“It was an amazing season where the team really exploded,” senior Ben Archer said. “We really found the team aspect of track this year and put up some big numbers and performances.”

The team not only worked hard at practices, but they also bonded as a team through fun moments and jokes.

“We grew as a team and helped each other on and off the track. Overall, the year was really great for building relationships,” Archer said.

This track season will be remembered as a success and one which everyone involved enjoyed.

Softball/Fastpitch:

Liberty Girls’ Fastpitch dominated the 3A KingCo league this season as they won 12 games with no losses, placing them first in the 3A division. They finished the overall season with a 25-4 record and won the Sea-King District Championship. Liberty was seeded third in the state tournament.

“We won districts and made it to state for the first time since 2014,” junior Abby Gallas said. “We finished the season with a 25-4 record and broke all of our team and individual records.”

Liberty dominated Timberline 11-1 in the second round of state and then got knocked out in the quarterfinals against Walla Walla, losing 9-6. They faced Juanita in hopes to win three games in a row to reach third or fourth overall, but fell against them with a score of 18-8.

This year’s team brought their top performance through their collective perseverance and hard work on and off of the field.

Baseball:

Liberty Boys’ Baseball finished their fantastic 2023 league season third for KingCo, which culminated in a finish at the quarterfinals for the state tournament. Their success this year was a great combination of talent, hard-work, and teamwork as they spent lots of time coming together as a team.

“It was fun connecting outside of baseball, bonding as a team, getting better, and building relationships together. Our camaraderie really helped us on the field,” junior Rohne Klein said.

Being a junior, Klein is also very excited for next season. The team believes there are many things the program can look forward to.

“I’m really hoping that the young guys step up, so we can be successful again,” Klein said. “Everyone gets better every year and we’re hoping that happens again this year.”

Golf:

Flying under the radar, the Liberty Girls’ Golf team comfortably completed the regular season, ranking fourth among the KingCo teams. But delivering a fantastic finish in the postseason, the girls placed second among all the teams in the state.

“Yes, we played very well in the postseason but above all, we had a lot of fun as teammates,” sophomore Ella Kim said. “I’m really excited to be a part of this next year.”

Liberty was represented by these strong players: juniors Kylie McGrath and Aanya Sharma, and sophomores Audrey Park, Addison Tran, and Ella Kim.

Not only did the girls have an amazing finish at the state tournament, but they also defended the silver medal throughout all of the postseason with second place finishes at the KingCo league tournament and the SeaKing district tournament.

With their impressive finish at state this year, the girls will bring hardware home to Liberty with high hopes for the next season.
