The benefits of speed-walking

Gabrielle Parrish, Sports Editor

That group of middle-aged moms in your neighborhood have the right idea!
Power walking is a great form of exercise for people who can’t or would rather not do more vigorous workouts. While it is proven to burn as much fat as jogging, it is actually better for your joints to walk.
You don’t need to be an all-star athlete to get your recommended 30 to 60 minutes of exercise each day. Simply speed-walking daily can build your endurance, increase your metabolism, prevent muscle loss, and—on top of that—going for a walk is great for your mental health*. It provides a peaceful and cathartic time of day where you can think, relax, and de-stress.
You might also find that many of your everyday activities can be done on the move. Next time you are hanging out with friends, studying for a test, or listening to music, try getting some fresh air and going for a walk!
