Picture this- it’s the middle of February, after the wonderful lovey-dovey times of Valentine’s. The clouds loom overhead, threatening to unleash torrents of freezing rain on passersby. Flu, cold viruses, and other sickness is a constant enemy to peacefully passed days. These aren’t the ideal conditions for a break from anything, much less from school. Students want to have fun over breaks and relax!
It’s easy to tell that when the weather isn’t sunny, there isn’t much to do outdoors. It’s less than convenient to meet up with friends when you are just going to get drenched by rain or catch a chill, even if you’re a rainy weather kind of person.
Winter is aligned with cold season, along with other viruses, so having a break during peak-disease time is less than convenient. Surely nobody wants to be sick over break, mid-winter or otherwise!
Personally, I find mid-winter break especially boring since it’s a couple weeks after finals. You would think a break is well-deserved; however since it is scheduled so late, students have already relaxed to the point that given a break, we’d all be couch potatoes.
I’m not in everyone’s walls watching, but I’m sure many of you reading this are, in fact, guilty of my previous statement. I will admit there is nothing wrong with taking a moment to curl up and chill, but there really aren’t any productive things to do over mid-winter break aside from a bit of reflection time.
Don’t get me wrong– I’m plenty grateful that we have a period of time with no schoolwork, but wouldn’t it just be more ideal if there were more weather permitted activity options and less time wasted on idling?
In the end, though, this schedule is already set by the school. All we can do as students is to live with it and make the best of our time. There are still a variety of indoor activities students can do over mid-winter break to avoid the freeze and have fun.
Over breaks and throughout the school year too, I hope that everyone can find time to treat themselves, whether it be a spa, meditation time, a sweet, or a video game session. Staying healthy is always a priority, so keep safe from sickness and get some fresh air, bundled up warmly of course! The best way to capitalize on wintertime is to do some self-discovery and hang out with family or those in your household, since the weather may not permit social activities outdoors.
Spend time with loved ones and remind yourselves what is most valuable in your lives! Give your mind a reset so that when school resumes, you can face the day with a fresh new start. And if you decided to spend your break days outdoors, in the frigid weather… well, at least you’re a cool kid now.
