Welcome to Liberty: Q&A with new and returning teachers

What’s your favorite thing about Liberty so far?

“I like how small it is. It’s nice to meet all the teachers and see my students more often.”

Why did you choose to teach Math?

“I knew I wanted to be a teacher, and I didn’t have to work hard in math, so it just made sense.”

What children’s toy will you bring in a zombie apocalypse?

“It’s gotta be a baseball bat. Preferably a wooden one because I could put nails in it.”

 

Alyssa Flowers

What’s your favorite thing about Liberty so far?

“The school spirit. It’s cool to see everyone so supportive of our school.”

Why did you choose to teach Math?

“In college, I took a math class, and for the first time, I liked it. I wanted to be a teacher so I could help people like math.”

What are the colors you’d assign to school subjects?

“Math is blue. Science is green. English is red. Social Studies is yellow.”

 

Erica Garcia

What’s your favorite thing about Liberty so far?

“Meeting the freshmen I taught over quarantine as seniors.”

Why did you choose to teach Spanish?

“My passion is teaching Spanish and sharing Mexican culture with my students.”

If you lived in a fictional world, what job would you want the most?

“Someone like Madame Hooch in Harry Potter who teaches students how to fly on broomsticks.”

 

Nadege Maciel

What’s your favorite thing about Liberty so far?

“Seeing my students in person and talking to them one-on-one.”

Why did you choose to teach French?

“I worked in Canada and found a passion for teaching French.”

If you could bring any animal to school, what would it be?

“My dog, Lilas.”

 

Chris Matzen 

What’s your favorite thing about Liberty so far?

“The energy, the spirit, and community. I like how even though we’re a big school it feels so tight-knit.”

Why did you choose to teach Social Studies?

“I’m a history nerd. I love the discussion, the debates, and trying to make sense of the past.”

If you could only say one word for the rest of your life what would it be?

“It would have to be ‘donut’ because I’m hungry.”

 

Jamie Street

What’s your favorite thing about Liberty so far?

“I love the school spirit. Everyone seems like part of a community.”

Why did you choose to teach English?

“The students are great, and they’re very willing to learn.”

If you could change how one thing sounds, what would it be?

“The school bells will be birds chirping.”

What’s your favorite thing about Liberty so far?

“I used to go to Liberty, so it feels like I’m coming home.”

Why did you choose to teach biology?

“I like being able to talk about things that are interesting to me, but also about things that are relevant to everyday life and the planet around us.”

If you could bring any animal to school what would it be?

“I’m probably biased, but my dog.”

 

Amit Kher

What’s your favorite thing about Liberty so far?

“There’s just so many things. I like how the neighborhood is warm and has a dedicated commitment towards the school.”

Why did you choose to teach chemistry?

“I love chemistry, and I was in nonprofit teaching children who could not get a free education. I realized that students needed more education to escape that vicious cycle. Why not take it further once I move to the US?”

If you could only say one word for the rest of your life, what would it be?

“Simmi, my wife’s name.”

 

Reagan Minniken

What’s your favorite thing about Liberty so far?

“I love the community and the feel. The teachers here are amazing, and the students are on board for learning and getting going.”

Why did you choose to teach English?

“I was working at another school and was transferred here, and the content in high school is so much more interesting.”

What two foods would you eat together that others think is gross?

“I love food, and I can only eat snacks if I have one sweet, one savory, and one chocolaty snack available so I can balance the flavors.”

 

Lauren (L.J.) Grant

What’s your favorite thing about Liberty so far?

“I really like the people I’m working with, and I feel like I have been able to work with the entire Biology team. I’ve also really enjoyed the students.”

Why did you choose to teach Biology?

“I was teaching at Skyline, and I got the chance to come here and work with people that I knew I would enjoy working with.”

What are the colors you would assign to school subjects?

“Green or orange for biology, English is yellow, history is orange, chemistry is blue, math is red, art is any and every color, and music is black.” 

 

Janelle Williford

What’s your favorite thing about Liberty so far?

“The people are just so welcoming, from the teachers to the students.”

Why did you choose to teach Spanish?

“I hope to get kids out of their bubble and have them experience something new.”

If you could throw a tennis ball anywhere without repercussions, what would you do with it?

“I would probably try to throw it as far downhill as possible to see if my dog could catch up with it or not.”
