Not worth the hype

When Netflix announced that Tiktok’s infamous content house, The Hype House, was getting its own show, the outrage was rampant. Many people were left questioning why the streaming giant was shining a light on this seemingly problematic group of creators. After finishing the series myself, I am still left questioning this sentiment.

The show promised a deep dive into the members of The Hype House and piping hot drama. However, with each passing episode following the same formulaic storyline, I was bored and frankly disappointed.

The main plight the show focused on throughout the series was the refusal by many of the members to create content, namely Bang Energy ads. It is evident to viewers of the show the lack of passion ruminating throughout the house. Members seemed to spend most of their days complaining, rather than creating the content they claimed to “love.”

The lackluster energy provided by the group through each episode not only made the series painful to watch but depressing. In fact, when member Chase Hudson dared to express creativity outside the house through his budding music career, he was met with massive scrutiny from the group. The Hype House not only showcased the absence of passion for their careers but also their lack of support for other members of the house.

However, despite many dull moments in the show, I did appreciate the members’ honesty with their traumatic pasts. While these experiences are obviously very real, and it is important to address topics of mental health, the discussion falls flat—especially when these influencers showcase a blatant disregard for anyone but themselves. Partying during the pandemic, racism, and other problematic behavior shouldn’t be excused under any circumstance.

At the end of the day, while “Hype House” seems harmless, the series has promoted the behaviors and platforms of people who are out of touch with reality. The show gave me no reason to root for them or understand who they really are. “Hype House” is definitely not worth the hype or your time.
