A sequel that dazzles: Sing 2

Attempted murder, a spirited dance break, and animals dressed in Alice in Wonderland-themed costumes all seem like elements of a wild fever dream. While it may seem a little zany, these are all parts of the opening scene of Illumination’s latest sparkling flick, Sing 2

After Sing’s mediocre debut, the sequel seemed far removed from many movie-goers minds.

However, Sing 2 has surprisingly dazzled audiences, especially fans on TikTok. Many enthusiastic viewers have even gone so far as to say that Sing 2 is a “masterpiece.” Although these reviews may be overexaggerated, Sing 2 is undoubtedly worth your time.

Sing 2 follows koala Buster Moon and his talented cast of animal performers as they prepare to take their show from their small town theater to the glitzy entertainment capital of the world. However, to secure his validity as a showmaker, Moon promises to get reclusive singer Clay Calloway to join their project.

Sing 2 is a refreshing breath of air from the poorly written animated movies in recent years. The movie is more than just a lazy cash grab or sleep-inducing ninety-minute entertainment for exhausted parents. No, Sing 2 is full of heart, sublime animation, and packed with good-humored jokes.

However, for a musical, Sing 2 lacks original songs. Instead, it’s chocked full of popular chart-topping hits. While the songs are definitely catchy, it is jarring to hear “Bad Guy” or “There’s Nothing Holding Me Back” in the background of random scenes. It almost seems unnecessary.

Regardless, the movie unabashedly highlights its own main message: don’t hide who you truly are. Sing 2 probably won’t win an Oscar, but the movie delivers exactly what it promises to viewers from the very first minute—unadulterated fun, family or not.
