The aquaponics unit strawberry plants grow in the back of science teacher Lindsey Lattanzio’s classroom with the help of fluorescent lights and nutrient-rich water. Five students have taken on the aquaponics system this year in an independent research class, and their main task is to expand the current unit, eventually producing enough vegetables to supply the L’café. “The project provides great experience with chemistry, and it is helping me to figure out what I want to do in life,” senior student researcher Carlie Wick said.
