Albums Worth Checking Out: X Infinity by Watsky
June 2, 2017
Watsky, an upcoming poet and rapper from San Francisco, recently released X Infinity, which contains his most diverse work yet. Each song combines a different set of genres with the only overarching one being rap: “Tiny Glowing Screens part 3” and “Don’t Be Nice” focus on alternative rock, “Chemical Angel” uses 1960s trance, “Little Slice” has a “Remix to Ignition” by R. Kelly vibe, and that isn’t even the end of it. Though each song has a different style, every one builds off the tone the previous one had. The tone creates a bigger impact because it makes the themes behind the songs seem related to one another. His songs commentate about relevant social issues, such as gun violence or drug abuse, without taking away the fun energy his album possesses. Watsky adjusts the speed of his rapping throughout his music to emphasize what he says or amaze the audience—and it’s incredible. The album is great for a relaxed homework session or a drive home, and when all you want to do for an hour is to rock out or listen to music, X Infinity is a great choice.
