Lethargically trailing through the school parking lot every morning comes car after car of sleepy high school students, some barely coherent enough to weave into a white-edged space.
This coming Saturday, however, the same parking lot will transform into a buzzing mess of automobiles and energy from Liberty’s very first car meet. Liberty ASB is hosting a car meet called Patriots & Pistons on May 10 to celebrate the community’s shared passion for cars.
“The goals of it are to bring excitement and give a space for people to express their passions in our surrounding area, “ Liberty ASB student Aiden Shearer said.
A car meet is when people in the community gather to share and talk about their cars.
“Everyone parks in a parking lot, they get out of their cars, and they walk around and look at other people’s cars,” Shearer said. “It sounds sort of silly in theory, but it’s really cool to see other people sharing something in common with you.”
ASB hopes to use this common ground to build a community around the shared passion of cars. Shearer himself sees a community at Liberty with the same passion that he does, and he hopes that this event can help bring them all closer.
“This year specifically I’ve had lots of conversations with others at school that stood out to me about how people enjoy and have common interests in cars, and that’s a commonality I think would be fun to capitalize on,” Shearer said.
You do not have to have a huge amount of knowledge of cars to take part, though. ASB hopes to both gather an existing community and build a new one.
“We hope that someone will see that there’s a car meet hosted by Liberty and go to it and maybe they’d meet someone they didn’t know liked cars too–or maybe they’d discover a new passion themselves,” Shearer said.
Taking place in the Liberty parking lot, the meet is open for anyone to take part in.
“It does not matter how nice your car is, as long as you have a passion for it!” Shearer said. “It’s about building community and highlighting those in our community who enjoy cars.”
ASB encourages anyone to come take place.
“The hope is that as many people who enjoy their ride will show up as possible, the more the better,” Shearer said. “The car meet will be at Liberty High School in the front parking lot at 12pm – 2pm. Hopefully we’ll have a lot of people able to attend!”
