Liberty High School is often denoted in official forms as “Liberty Senior High School” as a way of differentiation. Liberty Girls’ Varsity Soccer is bringing this name to life, as their team is stacked with 14 seniors. Whether their unique age distribution contributes or not, the team is in the midst of a successful season.
Girls’ Varsity Soccer has had to figure out how to play together as a team this year, as the prevalent age gap on their roster is not one commonly seen in high school sports. Their roster consists of two freshman, four sophomores, four juniors, thirteen seniors.
“Even with us 14 seniors on the team, we all love the freshmen. The team is very close,” senior Girls Varsity Soccer midfielder Carly Whalen said.
The team has successfully battled schools within their league both home and away, achieving wins in hostile environments to propel them to four away wins. They have already equaled their away win total of four from last year.
“So far, the season is going well,” senior Girls Varsity Soccer midfielder Chloe Smith said. ”We lost one game early on to Lake Washington, though. They definitely have a good team.”
Their winning ways have enabled many happy memories to be formed, especially in a team primarily focused on succeeding competitively.
“My favorite moment of the season so far has been beating Mercer Island. We were tied throughout the whole first half, at their own stadium, and managed to win,” senior Girls Varsity Soccer defender Lillian Meeks said.
Success like this has allowed them to set lofty goals for the season.
“I think our goal would be to play well in KingCo Playoffs and hopefully make it to state,” Smith said.
It’s clear the team believes in their potential this season, even if each individual player is setting their own specific goals.
“Our goal for this season is to get to KingCo Playoffs and knock Bellevue or Lake Washington out because they are our rivals,” Meeks said
Looking forward, the team has an uncertain future once the 14 seniors leave. However, the talent the underclassmen have shown this year is certain.
“When the 14 seniors leave, it will definitely be hard for the freshmen and sophomores, but they will be fine. I know they’re great,” Whalen said.
The team is looking very promising going into the final stretch of their season. They would love more support from Liberty High School students.
They will play at home against their rivals Lake Washington on Friday, October 27.
