Winning winter sports: Q&A with the senior captains

Get to know more about your returning seniors for the winter sports season!

Boys basketball

Buddy Gallahger:  

Q: What excites you the most about the upcoming basketball season this winter? 

A: “Being with the team and hanging out with them.” 

 

Q: What is your favorite memory playing for Liberty? 

A: “Last year when Kaden Albergini dunked against Bellevue. It was so hype and everybody was excited.” 

 

Q: Any notable dates, games, and rivalries people should know about? 

A: When we play Hazen. You should definitely come to that one”. 

 

Q: If you had to play another sport at Liberty, what would it be and why? 

A: “Probably football because a lot of physical traits you need in basketball, you’re gonna need in football as well”. 

 

Eric Abel:  

Q: What excites you the most about the upcoming basketball season this winter? 

A: Finally being a senior, and just getting down. Having fun with the team, and  working hard for Kingco.”

 

Q: What is your favorite memory playing for Liberty? 

A: “Definitely last year. We had a Bellevue game at home in the regular season, where we kind of made a comeback. Kaden Albergini got that big dunk at the end and it was just super hype in the whole building.” 

 

Q: Any notable dates, games, and rivalries people should know about? 

A: “Bellevue is gonna be a big rivalry. And Lake Washington, who beat us in the Kingco championship. And obviously Hazen, of course”. 

 

Q: If you had to play another sport at Liberty what would it be and why? 

A: “Probably football because I feel like football has a great atmosphere at the games and it’s hype.”

 

Drill 

Jami Murillo: 

Q: What are you looking forward to most for the upcoming drill season this winter?

A: “We’re hosting our own competition this year which is something we’ve never done.iIt’s going to be at Maywood, so we need a lot of fundraising for that. Other  teams will come to compete and perform, and we’re going to state and nationals.”

 

Q: What is your favorite memory so far performing for Liberty?

A: “Performing with the K-8 girls at drill camp for Patriots in Pink because they were really sweet and it was my last football game.” 

 

Q: Any notable games, dates, or rivalries people should know about?

A: “Probably the Maywood hosted event.” 

 

Q: If you had to play another sport at Liberty, what sport would it be and why?

A: “Track.”

 

Taylee Klein: 

Q: What are you looking forward to most for the upcoming drill season this winter?

A: I’m most excited to spend a ton of time with the team as we work together towards state and nationals,” 

 

Q: What is your favorite memory so far performing for Liberty?

A: “My favorite memory is state last year because although drill goes to state every year, due to Covid last year’s state ended up being first for everyone on the team. It was an amazing bonding experience that I will always remember”. 

 

Q: Any notable games, dates, or rivalries people should know about?

A: “We have multiple competitions at other schools which will be finalized soon but the main event is the drill competition that we will be co-hosting with the Liberty cheer team. It’s on January 21st at Maywood”. 

 

Q: If you had to play another sport at Liberty, what sport would it be and why?

 

A: “I’d join the track team because I did it in middle school and was decent. Also because I’m too blind to play most sports well, and I’m very, very competitive.” 

 

Swim

Evan Arnold:

Q: What are you looking forward to most for the upcoming swim season this winter? 

A: “What excites me most is that there is a new coach for the swim team and a more youthful team that is destined to do great things this year and in the future as well”.

 

Q: What is your favorite memory so far swimming for Liberty?

A:” My favorite memories in swimming so far are the morning practices we have at Hazen and getting work done early with the boys like always”. 

 

Q: Any notable games, dates, or rivalries people should know about?

A: “Notable meets people should know about is Newport. It’s always a high stakes meeting and usually late at night so the tensions are extremely high, and a lot of personal records are usually broken during this meet”. 

 

Q: If you had to play another sport at Liberty, what sport would it be and why?

A: “I would probably run cross country because they have a great culture and it is really fun”.

 

Gordon Stempson: 

Q: What excites you most about the upcoming swim season this winter? 

A: “I’m excited to have a new year. We have a team that’s open to more lanes since Mount Si won’t be in the way. To finish off my high school career swimming which is pretty nice.” 

 

Q: What is your favorite memory so far swimming for Liberty?

A: “During COVID we had these weird practices and we played Ultimate Frisbee, our warmup for practice just consisted of frisbee. For more swimming related, the swimming at Kingco and the tense competing environment”. 

 

Q:  Any notable games, dates, or rivalries people should know about?

A: “The only team we want to be against is Skyline”.

 

Q: If you had to play another sport at Liberty, what sport would it be and why?

A: “Probably track because it’s a similar competing environment. I love the format of the sport since it is similar to swimming with the times, heats, competing against yourself, it’s not like a team game”. 

 

Girls Basketball 

 

Melaya La Madrid:

Q: What excites you most about the upcoming basketball season this winter? 

A: “I’m excited for my senior season and spending time with the team”. 

 

Q: What is your favorite memory so far playing for Liberty Basketball?

A: “Listening to Taylor Swift at practices.” 

 

Q: Any notable games, dates, or rivalries people should know about?

A: “Hazen. Always Hazen.”

 

Q: If you had to play another sport at Liberty, what sport would it be and why?

A: “Golf, because I’m friends with Michelle Warlick”. 

 

Cheer

Rian Lautenslager

Q: Are there any notable events for the upcoming year that Liberty students should attend to support cheer?

A: Our mini cheer camp, where we teach children kindergarten to eighth grade a routine, which they perform at halftime, so students can support the kids and the team.

Jessica Goodman

Q: What has been your favorite memory made during cheer this year?

A: It would have to be when we decorated our cheer boxes at the beginning of the year. We got to bond as a team and see everyone’s creativity on their finished boxes.

Gymnastics 

Sophia Mirante

Q: What excites you most about the upcoming gymnastics season this winter?

A: For me, of course, competing, especially in floor routines. The process of choosing a song, and then combining it with the required skills, which I eventually get to perform, is very fun and exciting.
