Fall Sports Recap

Despite last year’s challenges, Liberty sports started the 2021 school year with a great fall season.
Football:
- Qualified for the district playoffs.
- Placed 2nd in KingCo 3A League.
- Won 7 games; lost 3 games.
- “Defense intercepted 13 passes, the most I can remember us ever having,” Liberty football coach Stephen Valach said. “It makes a statement about the skills of our linebackers and defensive backs, as well as the pass rush of our defensive linemen to force those bad throws by the opponent’s QB.”
- Offensive line only gave up one quarterback sack all season.
- Sophomore Jaxson Thoresen scored 11 touchdowns: 5 receiving touchdowns, 4 rushing touchdowns, 1 kickoff return touchdown, and 1 interception return touchdown.
- “Just being able to get out and play games in front of our home fans was a noteworthy occurrence!” Liberty football coach Stephen Valach said. “The energy and electricity for the first home game versus Issaquah was unreal.”
Girls Soccer:
- Qualified for the KingCo 3A tournament.
- Placed 2nd in KingCo League.
- Overall, the team won 10 games; lost 6 games.
- In league play, the team won 9 games; lost 3 games.
- Senior captain Ashley Kirschner was named league co-offensive MVP and was the team’s leading goal scorer. She earned a spot on the 1st Team All League with fellow Patriots sophomore Carly Whalen and senior captain Maggie Hultquist.
Cross Country:
- Led by team senior captains Mark Stevenson, Katie Blauvelt, and McKenzie Maresh, the runners came together as a team and raced at the KingCo State qualifier.
- In the boys race, four teams were separated by just one point for the final spot to State.
- Most of the runners on the 2021 teams set personal bests throughout the season.
- Due to restrictions, the Liberty cross country season started off slow but regained traction in the later months.
Girls Swim and Dive:
- Eight athletes qualified for State.
- Three athletes, senior Emily Lew, junior Keaton Canaday and junior Savanna Taylor, competed in individual events.
- Four athletes, senior Olivia Briggs, senior Dominique Visperas, junior Keira Pham, and junior Andie Moon competed in the three relay events.
- Liberty took 15th as a team and placed 8th in the 400 free relay.
- Sophomore and first year swimmer Alexis James rocked the end of the season and contributed to the district champion teams in the sprint freestyle.
- Juniors Keaton Canaday and Savanna Taylor were both 2nd team All-League. Junior Keira Pham was an honorable mention.
Girls Volleyball:
- Qualified for the KingCo Tournament.
- Placed 5th in the KingCo 3A League.
- The team set a record of 4 losses; 8 wins.
- The team’s best win was a 3-0 sweep of Juanita at home and their comeback to beating Hazen in 5 sets.
- Senior captain Kaya Vong was voted All KingCo first team.
- Senior athletes Mya Stewart and Leah Wong were voted KingCo Honorable Mention.
Boys Tennis: Yet to receive statistics
- The team competed in the KingCo tournament in October.
- Placed 6th in KingCo 3A.
- Seniors Owen Mystkowski and Daniel Zhang competed in singles at the KingCo tournament.
- Juniors Brayden Lupkes and Bauer Hanson competed in doubles at the KingCo tournament.
- Senior Jonahtan Hei and junior Morgan Ringwood qualified to the semi final match (doubles) at the KingCo tournament.
- The team finished the season with a 2:7 overall ratio.
- The team experienced a remarkable turnout this year, with approximately 60 athletes.
Boys Golf:
- Placed 3rd in the league tournament to qualify for the district tournament.
- The team participated in both the league and district tournaments. Sophomores Kellan Cour and Isaac Tran, and freshmen Jay Sakagami and Calvin Cakarnis competed in both tournaments.
- Overall, the team finished with a 4-4 ratio in league matches.
- Freshman Calvin Cakarnis hit a hole in one against Mercer island at Twin Rivers Golf Course during a league match. “That’s the first one I’ve seen in my 14 years of coaching golf,” Coach Jon Kinsley said.
- Junior athlete Jack Adams finished 3rd at the league tournament and was awarded 1st team All-KingCo. Adams has since competed at the district tournament. It is yet to be determined if he will qualify for state as an individual player.
