Often, someone will order a popular TikTok shirt from Shein, but when it comes two weeks later, a strange event occurs, where they are deemed a trend follower for wearing it. I call this occurrence a waste of money.
We live in a world when personal style is a thing of the past and popular style is the future. You want a cool Brazil shirt? Sure, you can get it, but beware of the mix of reactions you’ll get by wearing it. To some, it’s the coolest thing ever, and they wish they had it. To others, you’re a Tiktok style final boss.
So discard the chunky gold jewelry TikTok has forced into your hands, have away with the popular, but not practical, Uggs, and be prepared to find out that style isn’t what others deem “cool”; style is what you want it to be.
Listen, it’s perfectly fine to have your style be babydoll tops, huge jorts, pink Adidas Sambas, flower claw clips, and mounds of jewelry that could pay for your next car, but to move on from this to another style in a span of a couple years, or more accurately, months, is a whole other thing.
When’s the last time you saw someone wear cow print? When’s the last time you saw someone wear cow print and didn’t think it was cringe? Cow print was in only about four and a half years ago. “A phase,” some people call it. “An embarrassing stage,” say others. Well I say that, no, it wasn’t just a phase or a stage for you cow print lovers. It was a trend. And when people stopped wearing bucket hats, and thinking frogs were cool, you didn’t think bucket hats or frogs were cool either.
I don’t find it acceptable to see the same people who wore clout glasses in 2021 make fun of other people who still wear them just because they went out of style. Why is it cringe four years later? What changed?
“We’ve gotten older, Anna! We’re more mature now!”
We’ve gotten older, but we aren’t more mature in the slightest. It used to be that we got new clothes a lot as kids, because we were growing fast. Now, we’re not growing as much, but we’re still buying new clothes way more than we need to. Why? To follow impossible standards of fashion trends that come and go within months. And why do we feel the need to try and navigate this race to become the “coolest”? Because for most teenages, how you look and how you’re perceived is priority.
However, I have news for everyone: no one cares as much about you as they care about themselves. So let’s stop this madness! Don’t worry about being judged because everyone is judging themselves more than they are judging you. Wear that Lulu Align top, or wear that Anti Social Social Club Sweatshirt! Do what you want, because personal style shouldn’t be swayed with what’s popular.
