People that dislike winter baffle me. Don’t get me wrong everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but some opinions are blatantly and outrageously false. I don’t blame these buffoons; they are simply ignorant to the magic of winter. And that’s why I am here: to share the gifts that winter provides, hopefully giving some much needed enlightenment to the winter haters of the world.
One of the biggest complaints I get is that winter makes everything dark so early. And? Back in the cavemen days humans would thump their fists against their chest and terrorize the night. When did modern day humans get so weak? The dark isn’t going to stop you from doing whatever you usually like to do – the only person that’s stopping you is yourself.
Even if you don’t like going out when it is dark, winter makes your home so much cozier. When it gets dark, I curl up with my favorite blanket, slip on my thick winter socks, and heat up some apple cider. Nothing makes me appreciate my house more than the sky getting dark at 4pm.
And for those who don’t like snow… I don’t believe you. Imagine you wake up one morning to find a fresh blanket of white covering your patio, your yard, and most importantly– the roads. Snow means that buses slip into ditches, which means you get a day off from school! It’s like a surprise present. You begrudgingly wake up, haul yourself out of bed, look out the window, see snow, and then get back into bed for another five hours.
How could you not love snow!? Not only does it cancel school, but it provides you with a million different activities: sledding, snowmen, igloos, skiing, snowboarding, snowfights, and much more. If you’re not into that kind of thing, it still means no school, which is good enough of a gift.
Even if you don’t like winter weather, you cannot deny that it brings some pretty awesome holidays. From October to December you always have something to look forward to. This time of year, seniors are stressing about college scholarship applications and juniors are cramming for their SAT while simultaneously handling the crushing weight of schoolwork, BUT Halloween is in two weeks which cures everything.
There is always something to look forward to! You can dislike winter but there is no way you hate Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, AND New Years – it’s impossible.
Even Christmas alone is enough to love winter. I love decorating my house and wearing the most horrendously atrocious ugly sweaters. And don’t get me started on Christmas music – I’m pretty sure it cured my childhood depression.
While the gifts are a bonus, I love that Christmas means seeing extended relatives and gorging on unlimited amounts of comfort foods. Winter is not only the weather, it is an embodiment of cozy socks, gifts, family get-togethers, hot chocolate, food-induced sleep comas, warm fires, fuzzy blankets, snowball fights, and more.
I understand if you favor another season over winter, but to those that dislike winter – to those that go out of their way to say “I hate winter” – I sincerely wish you the best in this life, but, respectfully, book an appointment with a therapist.
