Temperatures begin to drop. Days slowly get shorter. Students break down under the weight of their schoolwork into a gentle freeze. Breaking out of the ice, the Associated Student Body (ASB) welcomes the Liberty community with Snowcoming Week. Liberty becomes a fleeting winter wonderland for the final precious moments before the welcoming of a well deserved break. Until then, ASB plans to organize activities to foster a warm spirit in these cold days.
“We’re going to try to do a bigger focus on lunchtime activities because they were successful at homecoming,” ASB Advisor Michelle Munson said. “Lunchtime can be a time for decompression, so we try to add things that aren’t a big ask of students like hot cocoa or cookie decorating.”
Aiming for a low-stress segue into the break, ASB organizes activities to help students lighten up after the week of essays and exams that usually precede winter break. To organize these events, ASB delegates tasks to its members to help streamline the process of event planning.
One example of a committee is ‘small things,’ headed by senior Disha Naik. Consisting of members from ASB, they discuss the little details that make Snowcoming fun for everyone.
“We’re discussing a lot of things,” junior Class Treasurer Blessy Clement said. “ We’re gonna put candy canes on cars, arrange a scavenger hunt, and possibly do candy grams.”
Another committee to help Snowcoming run smoothly centers around lunchtime activities. This involves any type of food, drink, or craft available to the students during lunch times.
Extending this out to teachers, ASB plans on giving them refreshments throughout the week.
“One of our pieces is delivering coffee to teachers in making sure they feel the same welcome that we push towards students. So it’s just giving everyone their own little bit of Snowcoming,” ASB President Makai La Madrid said.
The Snowcoming spirit isn’t just centered around the students, as the staff competes in a school-wide door decorating contest. While most teachers decorate their own doors, Art Club president Jocelyn Hood takes it one step further.
“We have one week where we plan the design and then we put up a big, flat color, and that’s all we do for that meeting. We spend the next meeting cutting everything and trying to get all the pieces made,” Hood said. “We do Daughters’ door, Hood’s door, and the entire wall between it. It’s really elaborate, and we spend two or three weeks working on it.”
While Art Club decorates the doors of a lucky few, ASB also decorates the halls with elaborate displays, similar to that of Homecoming week. Going beyond decorations, ASB is making sure everyone feels welcome while warming the spirits of students and teachers alike.
“Snowcoming means a week full of friendship, gratefulness, and time to make a positive difference at our school,” Clement said.
