Liberty and COVID-19: a guide
February 4, 2022
COVID-19 has taken on a new form with the variant Omicron rapidly spreading across the United States. Originating in South Africa, Omicron later spread to Great Britain and to the United States of America. While not known for causing severe sickness, Omicron is known for its high rate of transmission, making it especially dangerous for the unvaccinated.
Currently, America is in the midst of a wave of rising Omicron cases that are pushing hospitals towards maximum capacity. Some have even raised the question of school closures as cases begin to affect younger groups. Teacher unions closed down schools while in discussion with their districts, and students have even staged walkouts to protest for better safety protocols.
Even if things may seem normal now, it is important to remember that Liberty has been greatly affected by the surge of Omicron.
“The current increase in positive cases at Liberty has influenced our students and staff mostly with attendance. Students or staff that have to quarantine for a period of time lose valuable instruction,” Liberty COVID-19 Supervisor Loren Krogstad said.
For Liberty students, a school closure would come from the State Superintendent, which means that all students should be ready and aware of the most recent news on COVID-19 to stay safe. It is possible that protocols and school attendance may change with the news of Omicron, though unlikely.
“It is good to stay up to date on what the policies are and our symptoms. It will vary case by case, but we need to take the necessary precautions,” school nurse Jenny Harkestad said.
After two years of living with COVID-19, students may be tired of keeping up precautions, but Liberty has continued to stay safe thanks to their adherence to the CDC guidelines.
“I think it’s a unique situation we are in, but we are all putting our best foot forward to deal with this together. I understand the concern, and if they need help, they can come to me,” Harkestad said.
If students need any questions answered or help getting PPE supplies, Harkestad encourages them to go to the Liberty health room, where she is there to help make sure everyone stays informed.
To keep themselves safe, Liberty students need to remember to keep following safety protocols at Liberty. Staying healthy is not just for your sake, but for everyone you meet.
