Aquaponic students redesign shed
March 23, 2017
After a structural mistake from last year’s group, independent research students are back to designing the construction of the Aquaponics unit to provide fresh food for the L’Café.
“The key is perseverance, creativity, resourcefulness and solving the problem,” independent research teacher Mark Buchli said.
At the end of last year, the fish died, and the Independent study team feels the incident occurred from an accidental leak of zinc into the water. To prevent this from happening again, Buchli bought a polyethylene liner to separate the two.
“We have made a lot progress in the last month or so, and it’s really exciting now,” student researcher Dhamanpreet Kaur said.
The team feels that by the end of the year, they should have the entire structure set up, the nitrogen cycle working reliably, and have basic data on the unit in order to continue the project over the next couple years.
