Brooke Ury

I am pleased to award the Science Medallion to Brooke Ury as she is one of the brightest, most motivated, highly curious and tenacious science students I have ever encountered. Brooke rose to the challenge in AP Biology as a sophomore. She asked questions that forced me to clarify my explanations and this, in turn, deepened her learning and that of her classmates. Brooke blew my expectations out of the water in terms of how deeply she learned Biology and in how well she worked with her classmates to help them advance their knowledge. It was no surprise to me when she earned a 5 on the AP Biology exam. As part of the Science Olympiad, Brooke built a hydrometer to measure the salinity of water samples and won a regional competition for building it successfully. She won first place in the Designer Genes competition at the Science Olympiad Invitational. Brooke also won the AAUW Certificate of Excellence in Technology this year. She interned at the Systems for Institute Biology and spent last summer carrying out a molecular biology experiment. Additionally, she also made a model to better understand how cancer cells spread. The bottom line is that she is amazing and she can juggle an amazing load with a smile and unparalleled finesse. I can’t wait to see what other scientific feats she pulls off in the future. – Erin Stephens
