Although Liberty varsity volleyball experienced a tough 8-11 record during the season, four juniors came out with high honors.
Junior and co-captain Presley Sweeney and junior Alena Rozewski earned the KingCo second team award, and juniors Hannah Wagenblast and co-captain Katherine Hatfield earned the KingCo Honorable Mention Award. The awards were delegated by a collaboration of KingCo coaches who choose athletes that fit three categories: First Team, Second Team, and Honorable Mention. Nominations are brought up by coaches from opposing team based on their own observations. The awards are based on merit.
“It means a lot to receive the second team award,” Sweeney said. “Most of the time it is mainly seniors getting the award, so being juniors and getting that was amazing and a great honor.”
Hatfield and Wagenblast are also excited about receiving the Honorable Mention Award.
“I think it was amazing for everyone who got an award on the team,” Hatfield said. “It is a big deal because we are a small 2A team playing in a 3A league.”
Wagenblast believes the team has worked really hard to bring the team this far. She feels honored that other teams can see their potential.
The young team hopes to improve next season. The players plan to work on consistency in order to play strong the entire season. Many varsity players plan on playing club volleyball to improve their skills individually.
