Drama club receives 5th Ave nominations

Anyone who saw this year’s musical knows it was good, but the 5th Avenue Theater thought it was excellent in several categories.

The Patriot Players production of Once upon a Mattress received three nominations this year for 5th Avenue Awards. These included a nomination for Outstanding Costume Design, senior Mady Daly’s nomination for Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Featured Ensemble Role for her role as Jester, and junior Marcus Milyko’s nomination for Outstanding Performance by an Actor or Actress in a Non-Singing Role for his role as King Sextimus.

For these nominations Liberty competes with all high schools that put on a spring musical in Washington, so to be nominated is a huge honor.

“It was really encouraging to hear some of my cast mates say that they thought I was good enough to get nominated, and I think a lot of the confidence I had onstage was thanks to their support,” Daly said.

“I am honored [to be nominated for this award]. When you imagine how many high schools perform musicals in the state and see the very creative efforts of others at the awards ceremony, it’s quite amazing to be among those considered ‘outstanding.’” Costume Designer Susan Canaga said.

This Tony Awards-style ceremony allows for high school students from across Washington State to gather to celebrate and honor their exceptional musical theater productions presented during the 2013-2014 school year.

The award show will take place on June 9th at Benaroya Hall
